Born in 1983 in France, Christophe Mathias began his cello studies at the age of seven. In 2001 he received the First Prize in the Paris Interconservatory Qualifying Examination for cello and chamber music. The next year he was accepted at the Regional National Conservatory of Paris where he studied with Marc Coppey, as well as Paul Boufil and François Salque in chamber music. In 2003 he was selected to participate in the « Orchestre Français des Jeunes » (French Orchestra of Young Musicians) conducted by Emmanuel Krivine. That same year he received the Second Prize in the Epernay Competition; he likewise studied with Philippe Muller and Ophélie Gaillard at the National School of Music of Aulnay-sous-Bois where he was awarded First Prize on his Final Examination.
He has taken master classes with Christoph Henkel, Anner Bylsma, Dmitry Ferschtmann and Rohan de Saram.
In September 2004, C. Mathias was accepted at the Musikhochschule of Stuttgart in the class of Jean-Guihen Queyras where he studied for four years. His participation in the semi-finals of the Bach (Leipzig), Domnick (Stuttgart) and Lutoslavski (Warshau) Competitions is significant of his various and wide musical interests.
In 2006 and 2008 he was selected to participate in the Ensemble Modern Academy and in 2007 and 2009 in the Lucerne Festival Academy. He is a scholar for 2008-2009 at the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt. The close exchange with the members of the Ensemble and with many composers has given him the opportunity to concentrate on the study and the execution of 20th century and contemporary music. He performs in this Academy as a soloist, chamber musician, and as part of the ensemble in various festivals such as Klangwerktage in Hamburg, Ultraschall in Berlin or Edenkoben.
He is a founding member of the Ensemble Interface and the Ensemble Mesostics.
C. Mathias plays a J-L. Prochasson cello (1993).
